I don’t want to touch poo.
That is all I thought when ever some one mention cloth diapers to me. Seriously, who wants to risk touching poop?
I was a nanny before I was a mom and I had some encounters of the poop related kind. It happens with kids and diaper, kids and potty training [oh how I love wiping a potty training butt!], and well… poop happens. So when friends would mention trying cloth diapering to me, I couldn’t help but think why risk more possible poop encounters?
Then I tried some gDiapers back in the day. I used the flushable inserts. I found out I touched poop more often but it didn’t matter. I enjoyed that I was being more eco-friendly. Plus, it’s just poop. Hubby on the other hand didn’t like doing the flushables at all and I lost the battle of the gDiapers.
Then one of my best friends started talking cloth diapers to me. She showed me different diapers and cute patterns, slowly over time she won me over. Hubby was suspicious. He didn’t think I would wash them [cause to be honest I'm horrible at keeping up with laundry]. He also had issues with poop. Poop in our washer. After evidence was given, testimonies of diaper washing sworn in, and a declared “the jury is still out” I went and started buying diapers. Yes, before he agreed to it, I bought diapers. With my shopping, I won him over to a solid “we’ll see how it goes”. [you could say I shopped victoriously]
So a month ago, Liam moved out of disposable diapers [sort of, read on] and into cute cloth! His bum never looked so good. See above photo for reference!
Our stash currently consists of two types of diapers. gDiapers [their baaaaack!] and FuzziBunz. Liam’s thighs were a bit to small for the gDiapers when we started [which caused a few leaks] and we had to pull the FuzziBunz extra tight at the waist since were a little to big around his middle.
Now a month later he has filled out a bit more. The gDiapers don’t leak and the the FuzziBunz fit just fine around his middle. Liam is much more stout then Emma ever was which has actually been a help in fitting the diapers.
However… we aren’t totally out of disposables. We are having a tough time with night time diapers. The reality is that neither my husband or I can wake up every few hours to change a diaper. It just messes with our sleep and our day time routines. He has a job and I have a 2 year old toddler that I just can’t zonk out on. So until we figure out the right formula for night time [and maybe when he pees a little less at night] we still keep some disposables around for night time.
Are you a cloth diapering mama? Would love your tips on night time cloth diapering. What works for you? What didn’t?
I’m loving being a cloth diapering mama! It’s really easy! Hopefully I will add more diapers over time. I would love to tell you more about the diapers I use too so look out for those upcoming posts. Plus, Hubby loves it too. He finds it simple too and loves that we spend so much less on diapers [soon none on disposables!]. He has even done the washing and stuffing of the diapers! He is a cloth diapering dad! I love him all the more for it too.

So glad Justin is on board now! Wade loves cloth diapering too. He still sometimes snaps the grobaby diapers wrong, but he's getting there! Your stash is the cutest boy stash I've ever seen!
We had our share of difficulties at night too. We finally found our own solution. I had bought these diapers off of Ebay (on recommendation of a friend) and they were really cheap…

And I stuff them with one of my smartipants insert (any cotton insert would do), and then have the bamboo insert on top and it's pretty thick, but has worked for us for months! Previously, he would pee through EVERYTHING I tried (doubling, tripling inserts).
Also, you can bid on those diapers, and win them cheaper (my friend won too for 10 bucks).
I've heard the best solution for night time are the super-do inserts which have six layers of hemp and two layers of microfiber. You can add them to your fuzzibunz, and that would for sure work.

xoxo!
My daughter was a champion pee-er, and what worked for us was to put two extra inserts in her Mother-Ease diaper. One was a snap-in insert and one was a lay-in. Sometimes we would even put a gDiaper insert in there too. It sounds terribly bulky, but it wasn't too bad, and it kept her okay til morning.
Hemp stuffers! We used the Fuzzi Bunz but the hemp is what made them nighttime ready.
I just switched to cloth diapers (for the 4th time) about 3 months ago. I use Fuzzibunz and Thirsties. I really like both, but I like the Thirsties Duo Diaper the best. The fleece does not go all the way to the edge and they have double leg gussets, which makes leaks rare. Plus, they are made in the United States, which I think is awesome.
Yay for cloth! Fitteds work 100 times better at night for us. When my littlest was small we had lots of leaks at night until we switched to fitteds with a good wool cover. It's like magic. I was scared of wool before that, but it is AMAZING!
So ironically enough the only diapers that work for us at night are Fuzzibunz AND Happy Heinys!
